Summer Youth "Green" Initiatives

Bluegrass Goes Green - Overview

Bluegrass Goes Green is a new summer youth program and competition that engages teacher-led student teams, ages 16-21, to assess the current “greenness” of each community in the BGADD region and develop a plan for the community to “Go Green.”

The six-week program is designed to encourage creativity and innovation by challenging five-member Youth Green Teams in 17 counties to make a difference with green initiatives in their communities, county and state.

Green Teams, employing economically-disadvantaged youth, will compete to develop the best county green plan. Each member on the winning team will receive a laptop computer and Lexmark printer (printers donated by ConnectKentucky). All Green Team participants will be paid $7.25 per hour and work 30 hours each week with the program.

Where and How it Works

Bluegrass Goes Green is sponsored by the Bluegrass Area Development District (BGADD).  The summer youth program will employ a student team in each of the 17 counties served by BGADD, including Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Estill, Fayette, Franklin, Garrard, Harrison, Jessamine, Lincoln, Madison, Mercer, Nicholas, Powell, Scott and Woodford.

Kentucky Student Ventures Corporation (KSVC) is creating and managing the new Bluegrass Goes Green new summer youth program for the BGADD.

Currently, KSVC is recruiting access to schools and teachers as “Green Team Coaches” to lead and supervise their county’s youth Green Team for the six-week program.

What Bluegrass Goes Green Teams Will Do

Each team will research and develop a plan for each county that includes one or more “green” initiatives from the following topic areas:

Energy Efficiency/Conservation

  • Changing light bulbs
  • Changing toilets with low-flow toilets

Environmental Improvement

  • Recycling/Solid Waste
  • Litter Abatement
  • Greenhouse Gases - Ozone Improvements

Wildlife Preservation

The program engages the teams to learn about their communities as part of their green plan development. For example, the students request a tour of city to learn how government works and ways their community more is already going “greener.” This experience will teach students about leadership and how what they are doing this summer will help their community.

The Bluegrass Development District (BGADD)

The Bluegrass Goes Green initiative was awarded to KSVC by the Bluegrass Area Development District as administrative and financial agent for the Workforce Investment Board.
